Berean E3 Costa Rica Update

Bereans E3 Costa Rica

Berean E3 Costa Rica Update

Greetings from Costa Rica!

We finished our first full day on the ground having landed here at 5:00 a.m. We rested a few hours and then spent the afternoon in orientation. We wrapped up having supper with the pastors/leaders whom we will help with the church planting outreach this week.

It rains just about daily here for a few hours. Look carefully at the photo. Our team is assembled to bring light to a region of this country that is watered with some knowledge of God’s Word. Your part is to help provide the umbrella of prayer covering to bring God’s protection and blessings.

This trip is also my first time to travel with Kris, Jeff and Tara on an international church planting trip, though along with Natalie, they have served here and in Peru many times.

Return report – Kenya expedition

“…because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.  And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”  -Philippians 1:5-6

This is our prayer that the work that was begun in the hearts of so many will blossom and be brought to completion.

With the internet being such a challenge this year, we did not get the chance to share as many updates as we hoped, so here is a little catch up…hope you enjoy seeing how God is moving on the continent of Africa…

The trip started with us behind…delayed flights found me sleeping on the floor of the Denver airport just a 2 hours car ride from home and then on an alternate itinerary with a 15 layover in Frankfurt.  Almost a 3rd of the team had to start this way so it was an interesting way to begin.  With all the air travel we do we know this is always a possibility…

So we had to hit the ground running with the short amount of time we have to equip and encourage the nationals we work with and complete the campaign we do in the villages. This year found us returning to the coastal region of Kenya and many of the veterans were excited to continue the work that had been started there 3 years ago.  We had the chance to connect with many Kenyan friends and bring the message of hope to many in new villages.

We also focused on meeting needs within the communities using sports and educational programs centered around Malaria, HIV/AIDS and combating trafficking.  The US team was a small but strong team which allowed us to start many of the activities right away.  A first for this year was the construction of two all local-national teams that took on two of the sites for the week.  Seeing them hit the field was a fulfillment of many years of answered prayers.

In total we had the chance to share with over 300 people and over 100 gave their life to Christ.  We focus much of our efforts in discipling the new believers and we were able to return to 51 homes to spend time in the scriptures learning how to discuss and obey God’s Word.  We also had the chance to share with hundreds of kids through sports.

What’s Your Middle Seat?

Middle Seat

What’s Your Middle Seat?

A Guest Blog Post by Tom Walker

I Thessalonians 5:18 – “In Everything Give Thanks”

“Thank you for a middle seat? But LORD, you know that I don’t like middle seats. You made me with big legs and aging plumbing and I DON’T WANT to sit in a middle seat!”

That is a loose rendition of the ongoing conversation that I had with the LORD when we checked in at the British Airways counter in Dallas. You see, for the last 24 hours I had been trying desperately to get online and secure an aisle seat. That is pretty important to me. Having been to India seven times previously, I know how long these international flights can get and to be stuck in a middle seat is not my idea of a good thing.

My frustration mounted as I would jump online and log into AA.com to secure my seat, only to be forwarded to British Airways site where I would get a message saying, “Because your reservation has been made through American Airlines we will transfer you back to AA.com.” I felt like a ping pong ball!  After this happened a half-dozen times, my head was getting dizzy and my temperature rising. Two times I called Customer Service at AA, only to be told that they had sent the seating requests to BA; but, they had not yet been confirmed. ”Secure your seats when you check in at the airport.”

So, I prayed the LORD would work it out since I had done everything I could to secure an aisle seat. That is why when I checked in at the counter at Dallas I was not very happy, and thus the afore-mentioned conversation.

In the moments that followed the Holy Spirit began to ask me, “Can you not trust me in this? Won’t you thank me for a middle seat?” It took a few minutes of listening, but then I was able to pray, “Thank you LORD for seat 47B. I don’t like it, and I don’t particularly care for your sense of humor on this one, but thank you for seat 47B.”

I did it! I gave thanks for something that I did not particularly care for, but I did it. This is progress for me. And do you know something? It really wasn’t that bad. I sat by a Brit who was returning home from training with Snap On Tools and who was amiable, even understanding of this old guy. It’s not natural for us to thank the LORD for the things we don’t like, but it is possible.

What is your “middle seat?” What is the thing that the LORD is allowing in your life today that you don’t particularly like? May I make a suggestion? Give thanks in everything!

Note: We have arrived in Visakhapatnam and are preparing our hearts today to begin ministering to the Andhra Pradesh youth conference. I will be sharing two truths with them today that I am trusting will encourage and challenge them to serve the LORD:

  1. God chose you because He loves you.
  2. God’s will for you can be known.

Thank you for your prayers!

Your co-laborers,

Tom & Janet Walker

Be3 Expeditions 2013

Reach the Rest

Greetings Berean Pastors and Leaders,

After returning from a great Berean Convention this year, we had many people interested in the international opportunities the International Church Planting Team (ICPT) has put together through “Be3.”

I would like to extend an offer of assistance in mobilizing your members to participate and grow through one of the mission trips designed specifically for the Fellowship.

We would love to serve your church in getting more involved in international missions. We believe that God can use common believers to do great things as well as changing them into better disciples in the process.
