Bereans + Thailand

Enjoy these updates from George Cheek, on of our missionary apostles to the nations!

——-

Thursday and Friday we spent with Charlie and Deb Shimmin. They are long time friends serving with New Tribes Mission with roots in North Platte.

Our team of 12 people plus country coordinators, translators and national church people are pressing forward on several fronts:

  • 3 are out living in a northern village showing films and following up
  • 3 women are with the Priceless Cube team intervening with a city neighborhood of at-risk households associated with the red light district
  • 4 are doing outreach and follow-up with the same local church that Joel & Ellen Barber, Jeff Kautz and others worked with in past trips
  • Dean and I (along with a translator and Kelly) are assigned to go share with monks in nearby B temples

What a variety of strong holds!  We all need and appreciate your prayers!

Yesterday I was invited to tour the monk living quarters at one of the temples.  Today we have two return appointments with monks that have agreed to read assigned chapters of the Bibles we gave them.

In addition to the excitements of being in new surroundings and religion base doing evangelism, follow-up and church planting in partnership with local believers, the following comes to mind:

  • English practice is a good door opener in the monk schools
  • Not all among the young monks plan to make it a career. For some it is just a chapter of school and university
  • The younger monks are more open to hear about Christ than the older ones
  • ABC, our team of ladies, has been reaching out to the girls and women (some with children) who work the red light district of this city.  They also have spent some afternoons on a university campus having one-on-one conversations regarding Christ and how to avoid being pulled in to the sex tourism industry
  • One older man did pray to receive Christ.  His wife has cancer.  Dean Dye was able to minister to them in a special way since two of his family dealt with cancer. (Son Mike recovered whereas wife Caroline died) .  We felt it was a divine appointment
  • Also sometimes ministry involves looking up a friend’s son who has been back packing around the world letting him spend time with a friendly person from “back home” in the states
  • We have felt the power of your prayers

We had two important hand offs: new friends, persons of peace, to introduce to the local believers in Chiang Mai that we partnered with during the time we were there.

Our young friend the Buddhist monk whom we met with four times including over brunch. He continues to be interested in the claims of Christ and agreed to meet weekly to study the book of John in English.

Our older friend who we met with three times is an elected council man and past mayor of his village.  His wife has cancer.  After hearing Dean’s testimony and the gospel of Christ, he prayed with us.  On our last visit he agreed to meet and study the book of John.

Of course our team had many other conversations and left names and phone numbers with the local believers for follow up.

After many years of Christian outreach, Thailand is still 95.5% non Christian. Culturally and spiritually, most do not even consider the concept of God. As long time workers Charlie and Deb Shimmin said, “you have to be here for a while to even begin to understand the darkness here spiritually.”

Saturday we were tourists. We even rode an elephant across the river and through a bit of jungle.  Most of the team began their flights back to the USA that night.

A big thanks to our team leaders, members and all who followed us in prayer.

An EvangeBall Gospel Presentation

Here are some stories and updates from the Berean and E3 Partners Summer mission work in South America. Read more stories from past Berean global mission trips on the E3 SportReach blog.

Yesterday was an amazing day! We had many people come to Christ and had a great day doing discipleship follow up and getting to know our translators. One group did a foot washing ceremony for the translators and the pastor at their church. The sports ministry teams had a great day as well, sharing the EvangeBall with several groups of teens.

For several of our student athletes on the team, It’s good to find something that they can relate to the people with. We have many amazing stories to bring home about how God is working in Costa Rica. We’re  reminded to not only share with the Costa Ricans, but also the American tourists we are meeting while we’re down here. Today is our second to last day, thank you for your continued prayers. Our overarching goal over the next few days is to focus on equipping the Costa Rican believers for the work of the ministry.

All five mission points were represented well by the people of their churches! As we shared with each pastor how God had worked in our week, tears were shed and relationships were celebrated. We sung praises to our GREAT GOD, we were overwhelmed by how people who could not speak the same language were able to worship Jesus together and praise Him for what HE did! Thank you, to each of you reading this–as our prayer and support team–for the opportunity to meet and serve with Costa Rican brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank You Jesus for using people like us to help further Your kingdom.

Here is the summary from the week…

New Discipleship Groups started:  21 groups with 393 participants

Number of people that heard the Gospel message:  746

Number of new believers:  232

Berean E3 Costa Rica Update

Berean E3 Costa Rica Update

Greetings from Costa Rica!

We finished our first full day on the ground having landed here at 5:00 a.m. We rested a few hours and then spent the afternoon in orientation. We wrapped up having supper with the pastors/leaders whom we will help with the church planting outreach this week.

It rains just about daily here for a few hours. Look carefully at the photo. Our team is assembled to bring light to a region of this country that is watered with some knowledge of God’s Word. Your part is to help provide the umbrella of prayer covering to bring God’s protection and blessings.

This trip is also my first time to travel with Kris, Jeff and Tara on an international church planting trip, though along with Natalie, they have served here and in Peru many times.

Peru And Costa Rica Mission Trips

Update by George Cheek

Jan and I are just finishing up our annual Grand Kamp weekend.

It is hard to believe a week from today I, along with 28 other people will be in Costa Rica on a week-long church planting trip with E3 Partners followed by a similar week in Peru.

This has been a very special year. My goal is to visit all five countries the BFCnetwork is planting churches in before finishing my term as chairman of International Church Planting. These efforts are in partnership with E3 global network and local churches in each country each outreach is in.

Here is how you can pray for us:

Berean Africa Mission Update

Dear friend,

It was great to serve the Kenyan people along the coast this year and see God move in such mighty ways!  He is faithful to fulfill the plan that He calls us to join Him in!

Even though we had a small team this year, I feel God was orchestrating that it was time for the local leaders and church members to step in and take on some of the sites this year.  Those are key signs that the 5-year vision of Model-Assist-Watch-Leave is nearing the latter end of the scale.  Exciting stuff.

Even though I, Chad, will not be returning next year, I am glad to report that the Berean Fellowship is committed to continue the work along the coast moving towards the north and E3 SportReach has a great leader in Rick Larsen to move the vision forward, with the full support of Darby as the Kenya and Africa US Director.

As a whole, the team was able share with over 300, see over 100 come to Christ and most importantly be back in the homes of 51 families.  This, along with multiple POPs (People Of Peace: Luke 10) at most sites was a big encouragement.

Micheal Omega, thank you for all you efforts for the team this year and for your continued follow-up work along the Coast.  Rev. Joe, we miss you and pray that your recovery is quick and complete!

All, thanks to all for your sacrifice and vision for the Kingdom work in Kenya!

Mungu Akubariki Sana!

Chad for the Team

Return report – Kenya expedition

“…because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.  And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”  -Philippians 1:5-6

This is our prayer that the work that was begun in the hearts of so many will blossom and be brought to completion.

With the internet being such a challenge this year, we did not get the chance to share as many updates as we hoped, so here is a little catch up…hope you enjoy seeing how God is moving on the continent of Africa…

The trip started with us behind…delayed flights found me sleeping on the floor of the Denver airport just a 2 hours car ride from home and then on an alternate itinerary with a 15 layover in Frankfurt.  Almost a 3rd of the team had to start this way so it was an interesting way to begin.  With all the air travel we do we know this is always a possibility…

So we had to hit the ground running with the short amount of time we have to equip and encourage the nationals we work with and complete the campaign we do in the villages. This year found us returning to the coastal region of Kenya and many of the veterans were excited to continue the work that had been started there 3 years ago.  We had the chance to connect with many Kenyan friends and bring the message of hope to many in new villages.

We also focused on meeting needs within the communities using sports and educational programs centered around Malaria, HIV/AIDS and combating trafficking.  The US team was a small but strong team which allowed us to start many of the activities right away.  A first for this year was the construction of two all local-national teams that took on two of the sites for the week.  Seeing them hit the field was a fulfillment of many years of answered prayers.

In total we had the chance to share with over 300 people and over 100 gave their life to Christ.  We focus much of our efforts in discipling the new believers and we were able to return to 51 homes to spend time in the scriptures learning how to discuss and obey God’s Word.  We also had the chance to share with hundreds of kids through sports.
